What is Blu-ray?
Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format for storing computer data and high-definition video. The Blu-ray standard has been developed by a group of consumer electronics and PC companies. Collectively, this group of companies are called the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).
Blu-rays main competitor will be the HD DVD format. In comparison to the blank HD-DVD disc media, Blu-ray has a greater capacity per layer - 25Gb compared to 15Gb.
The discs are called 'Blu-ray' due to the blue laser used to read and write to the discs. The term 'Blu' is used rather than 'Blue' for trademark reasons.
The Blu-ray disc association announced plans for a launch on 23rd May 2006. |
